MATERIALS & FINISHES

Engineered Wood for Dining & Living Furniture

We use MDF for shaped furniture components and cabinet panels, and plywood for chair seat supports and internal sofa frames.

These materials serve different roles across the range, from visible furniture forms to the structures beneath upholstery.

Explore Shaped MDF Components ↓

Shaped MDF Components

We use MDF for table bases, shaped legs and coffee-table forms, creating furniture components with curved profiles and sculptural shapes.

Shaping & Refinement

After machining, shaped MDF components are sanded and refined by hand to prepare them for surface finishing.

Furniture Applications

Shaped MDF bases and legs bring curved profiles into the finished furniture. The form is considered alongside the tabletop and the selected surface finish.

Plywood in Seating Structures

Plywood serves an internal role in our upholstered seating, from chair seat supports to components within sofa frames.

Chair Seat Supports

Plywood seat supports sit beneath the foam and upholstery in selected chairs. These components are prepared according to the requirements of the chair design.

Sofa Frame Components

We use plywood components within sofa frames as part of the internal seating structure. The component arrangement depends on the individual sofa design.

Machining & Assembly Preparation

We machine MDF and plywood components according to furniture drawings, using different equipment for shaped forms, panel parts and assembly preparation.

Cutting & Shaping

Panel cutting prepares furniture parts to the required outlines, while routers and five-axis CNC equipment are used for shaped components. The machining method depends on the part and its design.

Drilling & Edge Preparation

Multi-spindle drilling equipment prepares holes for relevant furniture components. Edge banding is used on selected cabinet door and panel parts, according to their construction and finish requirements.

Production Reference

A pre-production sample is assembled and confirmed as a reference for the remaining order quantity. This gives batch production an agreed furniture sample to work from.

Painted & Veneered Surfaces

Painted and veneered finishes give wood-based components different surface expressions. We consider the finish alongside the furniture form, panel construction and materials used in the complete piece.

Painted Surfaces

Painted finishes are used on shaped MDF components and selected panels. Surface preparation includes primer application and sanding before the final coating, following the requirements of the component.

Veneered Surfaces

Selected wood-based components receive veneered finishes, introducing wood grain into the furniture design. The veneer and its application depend on the component shape and product requirements.

Selecting Materials for the Application

We discuss MDF and plywood in relation to the furniture component, its form and the intended finish. These materials serve different purposes across our dining and living furniture.

Component Role

MDF is used for shaped bases, legs and cabinet panels, while plywood is used for chair seat supports and components within sofa frames. The starting point is the role of the part in the furniture.

Form & Finish

Consider the component shape alongside the intended painted or veneered finish. The finish application depends on the individual design; the same treatment is not assumed to suit every form.

The Complete Furniture

Review visible wood-based components alongside tabletop surfaces, metalwork or upholstery. These material relationships help define the appearance of the complete piece.
